What if you don't fall pregnant straight away?

When you stop taking the pill, you have to wait until your cycle gets back to normal. Of course, you can get pregnant straight away, but if you are older, you will have to be more patient.
If it does not work immediately, it doesn't necessarily mean there is anything wrong. 60 % of women get pregnant within three to six months. However if you are still not pregnant after a year, consult your doctor.

Possible causes

Below is a list of causes that can delay fertilisation.

  • Bad timing. In a 28-day cycle, the fertile period lasts five to six days. Click here to find out your fertile period.
  • Wanting a child later in life. After 35, having a child is not a problem, but your fertility is decreasing and therefore it takes longer.
  • An unhealthy lifestyle. Unbalanced diet, smoking, consumption of alcohol and drugs: all these factors disrupt fertilisation.
  • Medication: Certain types of medication can disrupt your hormonal balance.
  • Stress or depression. Whether negative or positive, stress can delay ovulation. Relationship problems, illness, a new job or a new house are all sources of tension.
  • Genital infections. They can affect the uterus, the fallopian tubes or the ovaries. Chlamydia is highly pernicious: 99 % of women don’t even know they have it, but it can cause an obstruction of the tubes.
In some women, infection can damage the Fallopian tubes, which conduct eggs from the ovaries to the womb. This can stop the tubes working properly and they can become completely blocked.
  • Hormonal unbalance. It can only be diagnosed if you take tests. Your doctor will tell you if it is necessary or desirable.

Most of these causes can have a negative effect on fertility.
