Fever is an abnormal rise in body temperature (rectal temperature in excess of or equal to 38°C). It arises most of the time when the organism is defending itself against an internal attack (virus, bacteria, etc.).
So fever is not an illness in itself but the symptom (generally accompanied by other signs) of a pathology which may be benign or very serious.

Fever should disappear spontaneously after 48 to 72 hours. If it persists, consult a doctor.
